Universal Credit News – The Push Gathers as the Debate Deepens.

Universal Credit is once again in the spotlight of national discourse as the cost-of-living crisis intensifies throughout the UK. Families can barely afford to pay rent, energy and food bills, and recent statistics reveal that claims are up again this quarter. To a large number of households, the support is a lifeline.

According to campaigners, the prevailing standard allowance is low. It is said that payments do not match the increased living costs of today. Costs of housing, gas and electricity have all increased. This has seen food bank consumption rise to levels never seen before and personal debt levels amongst claimants continue to increase.

There is mounting pressure on lawmakers at Westminster. Other MPs are demanding immediate changes such as an increase in payments. There are others who desire changes that are long term e.g. a reduction in the five weeks wait period and simplification of work related rules. Supporters reckon such measures would alleviate suffering and get the people back to work sooner.

Local councils are intervening, too. There have been a number of emergency hardship funds established to assist residents with rent or energy arrears. Reducing reliance on crisis loans are being supported by community groups providing advice, training and debt support.

The government will have hard choices to make in the next few weeks. As Universal Credit claimants increase, and the public becomes increasingly angry, ministers will have to take action. Any modifications would remodel the manner the lives of millions of people are handled on a daily basis.
