USF News Update
USF News – Bulls Roaring on All Sides
The University of South Florida (USF) is once again in the headlines, combining athletic success, bold research, and occasional controversy.
On the football field, the USF Bulls went off the rails with a 34-7 win over Boise State, their first win over a ranked opponent since 2016. Quarterback Byrum Brown, after a month’s injury, tossed for over 200 yards and ran in two scores. Freshman Locklan Hewlett tossed a surprise trick play that electrified the crowd and the defense made key turnovers to clinch the win. As Underdog Dynasty pointed out, the Bulls are beginning to look like a program on the comeup again.
Creative: USF is still creative beyond sports. Professor Heather O’Leary recently teamed up with music students again to launch Oysters Ain’t Safe, a jazz performance featuring Florida’s dwindling oyster populations. Combining science, music and visual storytelling, the project brought new attention to environmental concerns of importance to local communities (The Guardian).
Yet the headlines also told stories of a darker hue. Former Chicago Bulls coach Jim Leavitt was arrested after an altercation with his ex-partner and now is charged with domestic battery and grand theft. The case has thrown his Hall of Fame induction into question and split the USF community, says AP News.
From the roar of the stadium to innovative classrooms to the courtroom, USF continues to make headlines. As the Bulls continue to make a mark in football, their impact extends far beyond the field, influencing the broader sports, culture, and societal landscapes.
